Pick of London’s best new musicals in 2016
Planning a corporate event doesn’t have to mean sticking with a conference or meeting followed by a drinks reception at one of the many event venues in London.
If you want to offer your attendees something different, why not combine it with a trip to a West End musical? Many people will have seen the popular ones, but 2016 sees the launch of some fantastic new productions that are well worth watching.
The War of the Worlds
Based on Jeff Wayne’s 1978 classic album, this musical tells the HG Wells story using a combination of live orchestral music, a giant Martian and 3D holography. It runs from this month until the end of April at the Dominion Theatre and features an all-star cast, including David Essex and Daniel Bedingfield.
What’s not to like about this traditional tale? It has to be one of the musicals that people are waiting to see the most. It officially opens in June at the Prince Edward Theatre, after a successful two-year run on Broadway. The show features Jade Ewen, formally of The Sugababes, as Jasmine and will include special effects from Jim Steinmeyer.
This musical opened on Broadway back in 1981, but has never transferred to the West End until now. It tells the stories behind some of the major Motown groups, such as the Supremes, and opens in November at the Savoy Theatre. Only a short walk from the River Thames and Embankment Pier this would make a perfect event combined with one of the Thames luxury charters.
Other musicals that are set to open this year include The Bodyguard, Funny Girl, The Go-Between and Show Boat.
